Here I am, getting this stuff in my throat and nose again... mad

I've always read that you should avoid milk (or maybe all dairy?) while you are sick - something about mucous production...

My question is: Does this apply to soy and rice milk as well? I don't actually drink a glass of it by itself, but I do use it in my oatmeal, etc.

Thanks!

Exactly Jenelle.

Unfortunatly, cow milk and soy milk can both be mucous producing as can anything creamy or starchy (including oatmeal frown). The mucous production often occurs even for those who are not 'technically' intolerant to these foods. It's just the chemical make up of the food that can cause it. However, mucous production can also be an intolerance reaction for some folks. If it is severe, you may indeed be experiencing a sensitivity.

My husband and my son also have this... it's for sure a "cold" of some sort.

My son drinks Silk soymilk since he is allergic to dairy, and I wondered if I should not give it to him while he has the runny nose, etc. I guess I kind of knew - but just wanted someone to confirm - that we'd all be better off with just water when we're sick like this.

Hi Jenelle,

Most soy and rice beverages are processed with either rice or barley malt. This is true even if not listed on the label. Since both oat and barley are gluten grains they can be bothersome for a great many people. A person does not need to be allergic to a food or even have a sensitivity towards it to be intolerant. It may be a matter of the inherent chemistry of the food when consumed. I don’t even give my pets gluten grains. I look for products that use amaranth, etc.

Also, if you are on a candida diet grains will turn to sugar with in minutes of being eaten. This could explain a stuffy nose. Cold viruses are always around us, those with strong immune systems do not make good homes for the virus. Eating the wrong foods may invite the virus in while the immune system is in a weakened state. I find oatmeal to be especially suspect (I agree with Tarilee it is mucus forming). This brings me back to following a rotation. A good rule for all people. Try rotating breakfast. Have you tried my Carob Breakfast pudding? It is really yummy, it calls for teff flour but amaranth is also quite good. How about some sweet potato or pumpkin pancakes?

The only time I use rice or soy milk (I never do dairy) is for baking. You are right, water from a pure source is the best beverage of choice.

I do rotate my breakfast, but no - I'm not on a full rotation diet. I've been waiting to get your book & another one for Christmas, and to get the Holidays out of the way before I attempt to go another step into things.

But what we have right now is definitely a cold, and I have no doubt that my Candida and my weakened immune system are responsible for me "catching" it again so soon after just having it.
