EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT DDS PROBIOTICS
What is the importance of acidophilus in the Whole Approach protocol? When candida populations increase to unhealthy proportions, this imbalance in digestive ecology can be the result of an excess of conditions or agents that are antagonistic to beneficial bacteria (i.e. that kill beneficial bacteria). The imbalance can also be caused by an excess of conditions that are beneficial to candida (i.e. that feed the yeast) or it can be caused by a combination of both factors. While its crucial to clear up both intestinal and systemic growth of candida while detoxifying the whole body, it is equally important to supplement with significant doses of beneficial bacteria to replenish what would naturally exist in a healthy body. Acidophilus is arguably the most important of the beneficial intestinal bacteria. The Whole Approach store sells DDS Plus and DDS Probioplus which are both excellent supplements of it. Both of these probiotic products also contain bifidus, another beneficial bacteria. We will discuss acidophilus and it’s benefits and then we will discuss bifidus. When the beneficial bacteria are in appropriate levels they keep candida populations in check. Important benefits associated with healthy acidophilus populations include: 1) Suppression of pathogenic and putrefactive bacteria/yeasts including Candida albicans. 2) Vitamin Production – Acidophilus is responsible for production of the vitamins B & K. 3) Food Digestion - Acidophilus produces enzymes (including lactase – to help digest milk) which aid digestion and assimilation. 4) Increased resistance to infection. Acidophilus plays an important role in immunity. 5) Deodorization of intestinal tract - putrefying bacteria in the throat, tongue, mouth and digestive tract that cause halitosis (bad breath) and odiferous intestinal gas. 6) “Build in” Natural Antibiotic support- Acidophilus produces a natural antibiotic called acidophilin which has been shown to possess a wide range of antimicrobial activity against common food-borne pathogens. 7) Acidophilus produces other substances beneficial to the intestinal health including lactic acid, acetic acid and butyric acid. DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus Probiotics are not all created equally. The probiotics part of the natural products industry has, in my opinion one of the widest ranges of product quality in the whole industry. The worst of these products are completely useless, dead or inactive probiotics that may do little more than possibly alter the pH slightly as they pass through the digestive tract. At the other end of the scale is the best of these. UAS Laboratories produces an excellent example of a highly therapeutic probiotic. UAS produce a patented strain of full size, hearty and human compatible bacteria. It’s named the DDS-1 L. strain and it is one of the highest quality acidophilus strains available anywhere. DDS-1 L. acidophilus has been extensively researched at the University of Nebraska and several research papers have been published showing its benefits to human health. Dr. Lance Peterson at the VA Hospital of Minneapolis, Dr. Keith Sehnert, Medical Practitioner of Minneapolis, Dr. Betty Kamen, researcher, writer and speaker, and Dr. Debasis Bagchi, of the University of Omaha, Nebraska have worked with UAS Laboratory founder and president Dr. S. K. Dash in research, development, promotion and sales of DDS®-Acidophilus product line in the USA and abroad. Clinical evidence both in vitro (in a test tube) and in vivo (in a living person) have shown this strain of acidophilus to be highly effective and UAS Labs has exceptionally high quality control standards and so consistently produce a superior probiotic. Special Features of the UAS DDS-1 Product Line: 1) The UAS probiotics are all completely dairy free. DDS probiotics are cultivated on rice starch and thus are completely hypoallergenic. 2) The UAS quality control standards for probiotics guarantee the number of viable bacteria (CFU/g) and UAS Labs was the first to develop such standars.. 3) The probiotics are packed in dark glass jars flushed with nitrogen (resulting in an oxygen-free storage environment to improve the stability of the probiotics. This packaging innovation was another first in the industry. The DDS-1 strain remains stable and viable for a long time. 4) UAS DDS products are tested for viable microorganisms at the time of manufacturing and at the expiry date. The viable cells are guaranteed as CFU (colony forming units) per gram. Many other acidophilus supplements do not list the amount of bacteria in CFU form and can contain as few as zero viable bacteria. Two to Five billion CFU per day is necessary to facilitate any significant therapeutic effect. 5) DDS-1 Acidophilus is specially cultivated to be acid resistant so it can pass through stomach acid (undamaged) and implant in the intestines and multiply 100 - 200 each. These tests and research were run and completed with every possibility of digestion problems.. Other brands of probiotics that contain inferior bacteria, attempt to counter the problem of stomach acid by enteric coating their capsules. Unfortunately only a very healthy, normal intestinal tract will be capable of thoroughly breaking these extra hard capsules down and releasing their contents where they are needed. These days, many people who need probiotic supplementation have suppressed digestive health. 6) Each UAS product is produced with the prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS) to enhance the growth of the bacteria in the intestines. The FOS is a “favourite nutrient” for the acidophilus and thus acts like a “bag lunch” for the bacteria once they are activated in the human intestinal tract. UAS labs was again, the first to launch the movement towards inclusion of FOS in probiotics, a practice that has now been copied widely in the probiotics industry. It is important to mention that the FOS that UAS Labs uses in their product comes from a natural extract of chicory root. Some products containing FOS use synthetic FOS that can cause intestinal distress! 7) DDS probiotics are human compatible and therefore multiply in and populate our intestinal tracts very effectively. 8) Unlike most of the popular brands of probiotics, the DDS bacteria are extracted using a slow centrifuge process to ensure that they are not broken up any more than necessary. This results in the gentle extraction of full size, intact bacteria that have the greatest potential to implant and multiply in the human gut. Bacteria extracted using less sophisticated methods tend to be broken into small pieces and are not immediately capable of reproduction. 9) UAS laboratories probiotics are formulated and processed to discourage mutation or competition amongst the strains. Their powdered product comes in single strain acidophilus only. Their line of capsules does include a bifidus/ acidophilus blend as these two bacteria are compatible under most circumstances. As an extra safeguard against strain competition, the bifidus and acidophilus are each cultivated separately and freeze dried separately before they are combined and encapsulated. 10) The UAS DDS products contain only bacteria that have been clinically verified to be beneficial and safe for the human intestinal tract. The formulations are based on sufficient concentrations of the bacteria that are most therapeutic and are not diluted with combinations of cheaper-to-produce-bacteria that compete with the important bacteria (acidophilus and bifidus.) DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus What is the importance of Bifidus in the UAS formula? Bifidus is a probiotic that is primarily found in the large intestine (colon) and acidophilus is primarily found in the small intestine. In addition to its colon hygiene and nutrient production role, bifidus is also responsible for aiding the breakdown of certain complex carbohydrates (such as those found in beans and cruciferous veggies). Strains of this bacteria are naturally found in higher levels in children and in vegans. Bifidus can be compatibly stored alongside of acidophilus (when processed properly) and works synergistically with it once activated in the colon. DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus Why is FOS in the UAS DDS product? FOS stands for fructo-oligo-saccharides. This special complex sugar is naturally sourced from chicory root and or Jerusalem artichoke. It is included in the capsules because it provides nourishment for the probiotics once they are activated. The immediately available energy source for the bacteria ensures that it can reach optimum effectiveness immediately upon being reactivated out of the dormant state that it is stored in (It activates when it comes in contact with warmth and moisture). I like to call the FOS a “bag lunch “ for the bacteria. Some probiotic companies use synthesized FOS and this form is found to have undesirable effects on the digestive system – perhaps even feeding the candida. Only the natural FOS extract has been proven to be beneficial to the probiotics AND comfortable for human digestion. UAS laboratories uses natural chicory sourced FOS only. DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus I’ve heard that I should mix the DDS in with the purge drink but I’ve also heard of folks taking it between meals. When and how should I take it? You may mix the acidophilus with the drink and or, take it on its own. For years, Attogram customers have been mixing it with the drink and been getting good results so if you prefer, you may continue following the original instructions. However, we in fact altered our recommendation in this regard a few years ago (in 2002). Over the years, we have had some folks taking the DDS several times per day in addition to mixing it in with the drink and have had very positive feedback from this approach. My approach has always been to have my clients take it separately on an empty stomach as I feel that the bacteria have an easier time of implanting themselves in the intestinal wall when they are consumed without the fibre. In cases of extreme intestinal distress, antibiotic treatment or constipation, some folks benefit from taking large doses of UAS’s Probioplus (up to 8 per day.) This formula is our preferred acidophilus supplement and its effects can be felt within a couple of days of use, especially when used in large doses. As with almost every aspect of the nutritional field, the issue of when to take probiotics is a hot topic of debate. The main argument is whether it should be taken with food or without food. You will hear of professionals in the field who have opinions which differ from ours. Our Whole Approach team has weighed the odds, observed the results of each approach and changed our recommendations to favour taking the DDS on an empty stomach. You may still, of course, follow whichever approach feels best for you. DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus If I have to travel with DDS, will the potency be affected if I store it outside of the fridge? DDS is one of the heartiest strains of acidophilus with long term viability. Keeping it out of the fridge for extended periods of time will shorten its shelf life somewhat but it is a superior product to the shelf stable probiotics. I would suggest that your DDS-1 will be effective even if you will be traveling for up to a month without the option to refrigerate the product. Try not to expose it to hot conditions for extended periods if possible but I think you’ll find that even taking some slightly compromised DDS-1 will be more beneficial than taking a supposedly shelf-stable brand. I have seen very little evidence that the so called shelf-stable brands have any benefits at all. UAS Labs Probiotics - Shelf Life UAS Laboratories manufactures the DDS Plus and Probioplus at about twice the guaranteed potency to factor in the following: shipping, storage, shelf life, heat and time out of refrigeration. The DDS Plus Acidophilus and Probioplus are packaged in glass bottles that are nitrogen flushed to ensure a more stable environment. This process allows the Probiotics to be heat stable up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit for a period of time (up to seven days). The DDS Plus and Probioplus are shelf stable for more than six months at room temperature and 2 years under refrigeration. DDS Plus Acidophilus UAS Probioplus This message has been edited.
